Review 2016/17

A grand brasserie, an attractive dome bar under a glass cupola and a formal restaurant in an imposing, grade II-listed building built as a bank. The byword is classic, even conservative, when assessing this list, with a few treasures to be uncovered. The 1776 Dining Room is the highlight of the eateries, where head chef, Juri Ravagli, formerly of The Drones Club and Harry’s Bar, unites French, British and occasionally, Scandinavian influences. Begin with a classic bouillabaisse primped with saffron, or choose one of four tartares (fallow deer, Scotch Black Angus, tuna or scallop) and follow with whole grilled Dover sole, on or off the bone. Nearly 30 wines from established regions are offered by the glass on Pierre Smit’s list, including Chablis from Domaine de Colombier. Mark-ups are not overly greedy, with relative bargains to be found in the lower than retail price Petrus 1997 (£1,200) and Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Ponsot 1999 (£280). Pierre Smit, incidentally, cites his favourite pairing as ‘steak tartare with a glass of Côtes du Rhône’.
