Review 2016/17

South-west France and Bordeaux reign supreme here, with no compromise on the geographical link between the dishes realised by Toulouse-born chef, Pascal Aussignac and the wines, which are almost entirely from the south-west of France.

In the venue’s own words: “Our wine list aims to take diners on a discovery journey across the South of France.  Many of the wines and spirits which we import are exclusive to Club Gascon in the UK. Our sommelier works continuously to evolve the list and to make it distinctive and unique. The list is composed of over four hundred varieties of wines from the South of France.”

Elsewhere in France, Rhône wines are split, rather formally, between ‘septentrional’ and ‘meridional’, with plentiful offerings exclusive to Club Gascon in the UK.

Aussignac’s dishes frankly delight, from barbecued palm heart with octopus and wild fennel – recommended with white Graves (Château Chantegrive’s Cuvée ‘Caroline’), to a main of glazed black cod with sweet artichokes, verjuice and crunchy grapes from the à la carte.

It is very much worth keeping an eye open for the regular, informative wine dinners held here and at neighbouring small plates bistro, Cellar Gascon.
