BEST FOR

Burgundy wines

James Davy and his wine buying team have assembled a list that packs few punches, but delivers at all points of the price spectrum, from the Languedoc 'lip-stinger' Picpoul de Pinet (Berladent) by the glass to very fancy fizz by the bottle, such as the wine trade's favourite, Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs, as well as Krug Grande Cuvée Brut and Cristal alongside own-label libations (Davy’s Célébration Champagne).

Review 2016/17

Davy’s executive chef, Sean Davies, has created modern, largely wine-friendly British menu here at Woolgate described in the operator’s own words as, ‘an oasis in the heart of the City, opposite the Guildhall’. Dishes include a generously-appointed starter of wild mushrooms and spinach on toast with basil pesto, main of grilled free-range chicken breast with braised chorizo and red peppers, a smoked chicken Caesar salad from the early week set menu, and interesting cheeses from our islands, such as Stinking Bishop, Somerset Brie and Westcombe Cheddar. James Davy and his wine buying team have assembled a list that packs few punches, but delivers at all points of the price spectrum, from the Languedoc ‘lip-stinger’ Picpoul de Pinet (Berladent) by the glass to very fancy fizz by the bottle, such as the wine trade’s favourite, Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs, as well as Krug Grande Cuvée Brut and Cristal alongside own-label libations (Davy’s Célébration Champagne). Burgundy also gets decent representation in the form of Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle (Rossignol-Trapet).
