Turquoise of frontage, J. Sheekey Atlantic Bar is sister seafood bar to the blazing red J. Sheekey restaurant next door, Featuring a heated outdoor terrace overlooking Wyndham’s Theatre (where Madonna made her West End debut) and glamorous horseshoe-shaped bar within, it foregrounds responsibly caught piscine delights from sustainable sources alongside a ‘coastal’ wine list.
Begin with the signature lemongrass infused Atlantic Bar martini with Wakame vermouth, or flute of Herbert Hall Brut (whose winery makes wine for Highgrove) with smoked haddock croquettes. More substantial dishes by executive chef, Andrew McLay may include stone bass ceviche with plantain chips alongside glass frostingly cool Le G de Château Guiraud Bordeaux Blanc, seared octopus with sriracha aioli, wood roasted pepper and yellow fleshed Roseval potatoes with a carafe from a magnum of Mavrotragano rosé made by T-Oinos winery, Tinos Island. Alternatively, lose yourself in a whole platter of fruits de mer, ideally with a lobster…
Guillem Kerambrun, group head sommelier for Caprice Holdings, was inspired by the DNA of the restaurant to create a nautical but nice wine list. ‘What is more normal than for someone coming from the Brittany coast to highlight only vineyards near the sea in a restaurant like J Sheekey Atlantic Bar?’ he posits. ‘The oceanic climate is very helpful for the vine; the influence of tides and winds are a natural part of the terroir. All the wines are classified by oceans or seas and come from the main wine list of J Sheekey where we can find many wines from other pretty regions. So, do not hesitate to ask for the main wine list if you want some Chablis!’
The wines on the Coastal list originate ‘from the shoreline or within a few miles of the coast’ says Kerambrun, and selections may include, from under the ‘Atlantic’ heading, Sierras de Malaga (Motain Blanco) or Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, from the ‘North Sea’, Davenport Limney (Horsmonden), the ‘Mediterranean’, Grillo (Enologica Cassara), the ‘Aegean’ (Sénillo, Tempus Two), and the ‘Indian Ocean’, Kooyong Chardonnay.
In summer, the rosé selection drastically increases, ‘with more than 25 different cuvées, some of them proposed in magnums, jeroboams or Methuselah are offered by the glass and preserved with the ingenious Wikeeps® system!’

Longstanding, and still sharp on all levels. Drinking and eating at the bar is still the best way to experience Sheekey. Fish pie, dressed crab, oysters…
