Given Vongerichten’s Alsatian pedigree, expect messages in a bottle from home, so-to-speak, including Crémant, as well as still whites from Trimbach and Zind Humbrecht, supplemented by a sole Alsatian Pinot Noir (Marcel Deiss). France in general gets good billing on this easily navigated list, as does California and South Africa.

Review 2018

Sharpy dressed Strasbourg born chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten operates nearly 40 restaurants globally, including an acclaimed one in the Trump Tower. His first fashionable foray in London, Vong, opened in the mid 1990s at sister hotel, The Berkeley, closing in 2002. Spice Market at the W Hotel, Chinatown followed. However, this latest incarnation at the first hotel he visited in London, The Connaught, is feted as his ‘return’ to the city.

In the cossetting conservatory type, curved space, featuring stained glass panels and low seating, expect classic dishes from the Vongerichten repertoire, such as egg toast and caviar, crispy salmon sushi, and, to the particular delight of Instagramers, a black truffle and Fontina cheese pizza available in-house and, arugably extraordinarily, to take away.

Given the location – overlooking Mount Street and the former site of Allens, a fine butcher’s shop reported to have closed on account of rent and rate hikes – both food and wine prices are notably sheer. However, relative bargains do occur, including Art Series Riesling from Leuwin Estate and the odd Mâcon.

Via Coravin, by-the-glass picks could include 1996 white Rioja, Domaine Didier Dagueneau’s Silex, 2007 Cheval Blanc, and 1998 Château d’Yquem.

Given Vongerichten’s Alsatian pedigree, expect messages in a bottle from home, including flutes Crémant, as well as still whites from Trimbach and Zind Humbrecht, supplemented by a sole Alsatian Pinot Noir (Marcel Deiss). France in general gets good billing on this easily navigated list, as does California and South Africa.
