Review 2018

Magpie – the larger of clawprint, West End sequel to Pidgin – offers the largest selection of wines on tap in London according to sommelier, Marika Moulin, including Fino, Mosel Riesling, rosé-tinted Provence, and Friulian Refosco. ‘We are trying to build an unconventional selection,’ asserts Moulin. ‘Quirky, not mainstream, we want to awake the curiosity of the wine lover! All our wines are made by independently-minded producers, and are often organic and natural.’ Bottles could include alcohol-free Bacchus, flamboyant Istrian Malvasia, blotter-dry, incisive Hungarian Furmint, an ebullient Canadian Chardonnay-Semillon (Stratus), and a generous handful of fruit-forward picks from California’s valleys.

Vibrancy and acidity in the glass helps bring pep to an engaging, Asian-accented carousel of already bold dishes, which according to plucky restaurateurs, James Ramsden and Sam Herlihy, could ‘stay on until the four horsemen come knocking [while] others will come in and out like a minor but important speaking role in a Shakespeare play…’ These may include barbecued cabbage with lime pickle vinaigrette and hazelnut, coal-roasted beetroot with seaweed curd, ‘Japanese seaweed salad’, and pork collar with endive, lentils and apricot, followed by ‘birthday cake’ with white chocolate crumble and ‘thousands of powders’, or even Mezcal ice cream. Alternatively, finish with a glass of the exceptional and idiosyncratic, depthful red Maury from Mas Amiel harvested from Grenache vines in the land of Cathar castles with a plate of Tunworth – ‘best Camembert in the world!’ according to Raymond Blanc – with an assortment of alliums and heady truffle.

Progressively, Magpie are a partner of the ‘Drop’ App which is masterminded by Ian Campbell and Will Palmer, the owners of The 10 Cases and Parson’s. Purchases made this way incur no corkage, Sunday to Tuesday.

Guests are strongly recommended to avail themselves of the cocktail trolley, incidentally, liberating libations such as the MSG Martini, comprising Broker’s gin, elderflower liqueur, orange bitters and kombu, or the Szechuan pepper oil Negroni…
