Fell Brewery releases courgette beer with celeb chef Simon Rogan

The second collaboration between the two Lake District brands is a gose beer fermented in courgette juice.

Cumbria’s Fell Brewery has teamed up with local establishment Our Farm by Simon Rogan to produce the second in a series of four limited-edition beers.

The newest addition is a Courgette and Mint Gose steeped in fermented courgette juice, with a “restrained” amount of pineapple mint. Produce is sourced from Simon Rogan’s farm near the village of Cartmel, to reflect the beer’s Lake District identity.

The low ABV of gose beer, and the unique salty and sour flavour profile of this beer style, means it lends itself well to  experimental ingredients and fresh herbs. The new Courgette and Mint Gose sits at 3% ABV, its simple malt base allowing it to pick up the more radical additions, finished with a spritz of salt.

“After an excellent harvest of courgettes, and some long hours of processing the juice from it, I am really pleased with the result,” said Liam Fitzpatrick, head chef at Our Farm.

The new beer is on offer at the week-long Local Heroes festival celebrating Lake District artisans, from Tuesday 16 April to Saturday 20 April.

The celebration will be held at Simon Rogan’s restaurant Rogan & Co in Cartmel, which holds one Michelin star.

Simon Rogan opened his first restaurant L’Enclume in Cartmel in 2002. Since then, the Southampton-born chef has opened a series of restaurant openings in the Lake District, with a smattering of Michelin stars to match (L’Enclume received its third in 2022), helping to transform the Lake District into a gastronomic epicentre.

Also focusing on local, seasonal ingredients, South Cumbria’s Fell Brewery opened in Flookborough in 2013.
