A rare collection of Macallan whisky is to go under the hammer today, including a 72-year-old single malt and a scarce bottle of Macallan’s ‘The New Range Rover’.
The bottles form part of an auction held by online auctioneer Just Whisky Auctions, which starts at 5pm today and runs until 8pm on Sunday 21 July.
The auction includes 1,150 bottles of whisky, including Macallan’s oldest expression to date – a 72-year-old single malt housed in a Lalique crystal decanter.
The highly collectable liquid was released last year to celebrate the opening of the new £140m Macallan distillery and visitor centre in June 2018.
One of the other top lots in the auction is an extremely rare bottle of Macallan’s ‘The New Range Rover’, which was released in the mid-nineties to celebrate the launch of the P38 Range Rover. The whisky is now worth more than the car.
Other sought after Macallan whiskies included in the auction are the 50-year-old 1949 bottled in a Caithness Glass Millennium decanter; the 1948 Select Reserve; and the 52 Year Old, a bottle of which sold for a record-breaking £58,000 through Just Whisky Auctions last month.
The rare whisky market has exploded in recent years and records are constantly being broken at auction for the most collectible names in single malt Scotch.
“Every now and then an auction line-up comes along that has collectors and aficionados on the edge of their seats with excitement. This is one of those times.
“We are delighted to offer such high quality lots in July’s auction, which includes some incredibly rare bottles you won’t find at retail or in the resale market for years,” said Just Whisky’s director, Graham Crane.
“The price for Macallan has gone through the roof. We’re thrilled to be recognised by our sellers as the number one auction for rare Macallan and are looking forward to seeing the bids pour in.
“Forget fine art and vintage cars, with investors from the US and Asia, rare whisky is the best place to put your money for the best return,” he added. The auction will use a proxy system that bids on the customer’s behalf up to their maximum bid.
