Wayne Rooney gets the boot after Coleen splashes out on lavish wine bar

Birmingham City FC has sacked Wayne Rooney from his manager position just days after wife Coleen unveiled their costly home renovation, which includes a private wine bar.

Football club Birmingham City announced in a statement yesterday that it had fired manager Wayne Rooney after just 15 games at the helm.

Birmingham chief executive Garry Cook said “Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we have decided to move in a different direction.

“The search for a successor begins with immediate effect and we will update supporters when we have further news.”

The news has come as a blow for ex-Manchester United and England player Rooney, who planned to turn Birmingham City’s losing streak around when he stepped into the manager’s shoes on 11 October 2023.

The side lost nine games out of the 15 played under Rooney’s management, with Birmingham calling time on his appointment following a 3-0 loss to Leeds on New Year’s Day.

“Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback,” Rooney said.

“I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager.”

£20 million mansion

That family time will likely be spent in the Rooney’s £20 million Cheshire mansion, which has recently been treated to a no-expenses-spared makeover.

On New Year’s Eve, just one day before Wayne lost the manager gig, wife Coleen took to Instagram to reveal the results of their costly home renovation.

Included in the glow-up is a 12-seater square bar (pictured above) with curved bar stools upholstered by bespoke interiors company House of Chelsea.

Bottles of spirits and Champagne are displayed in a glass cabinet suspended over the bar, and taps for glass rinsing are built into the bar top itself. Hundreds of drinking glasses hang over the bar ready for party guests.

Multiple tables and chairs surrounding the bar are able to accommodate dozens more drinkers.

Many fans commenting on social media said the bar is akin to that found in a luxury hotel rather than a residential home.

Set on 40 acres, the Rooneys’ home features six bedrooms, a home cinema, snooker room, boxing ring, indoor swimming pool and underground spa in addition to the plush bar.

Though whether Wayne will be using it to drown his sorrows following the termination of his Birmingham role or to celebrate new opportunities in 2024 is unknown.
