Oranj natural wine bar opens in Shoreditch

After launching natural wine company Oranj during lockdown, Jasper Delamothe promises Londoners that the company’s first bar will be “a pub for wine drinkers”.

Delamothe founded Oranj in April 2020 as an independent online shop championing natural wine, having worked in bar and restaurant construction. “Lockdown enabled me to introduce the Oranj concept online, while providing an education on the low intervention wine movement. The success of the online shop and subscription was, quite honestly, staggering.”

Now the Oranj brand is taking the leap into the hospitality industry, as Delamothe explained: “Oranj was always meant to be a bar and I’m excited to finally bring the physical manifestation to life in Shoreditch. The London bar seeks to convert even more people to natural wine, while we will continue to operate the online shop UK-wide.”

The space, housed within a 2,000 square foot warehouse tucked between between Shoreditch High Street station and Brick Lane, has been enhanced with walnut, aluminium and concrete as a nod to the material used for fermentation and ageing vessels.

The wine list promises (as the name suggests) an abundance of orange wines, as well as “zippy Catalonian whites” and “low ABV reds”. There will also be a concise cocktail list including a Smoked Tea Old Fashioned and a Chili Margarita.

The first restaurant taking residence will be Decatur this December, which will be cooking up seafood boils, gumbos, oven roasted boudins and shrimp grits, among other New Orleans-inspired dishes. During the soft launch, from 3 to 16 November, more forthcoming guest host chefs will be announced. The bar will also have its own snacks, including hams, cheeses and croquetas.
