Eric Zwiebel MS joins The Samling

Renowned sommelier Eric Zwiebel MS has joined The Samling Hotel, situated next to Lake Windermere, as director of wine.

Born in Alsace, Zwiebel’s career in wine began, at the suggestion of his father, under the guidance of Serge Buds, Best Sommelier of the World 1989. In 1997, Zwiebel moved to the UK and began to take courses with the Court of Master Sommeliers, under the guidance of Gerard Basset. He would achieve his Master Sommelier qualification in 2001, winning Best Sommelier of the UK three years later. Since then, he has achieved numerous other distinctions in competition, and qualifications, and became vice-president of The UK Sommeliers Association.

With extensive experience in the wine cellars of Hotel du Vin, Cliveden House and Summer Lodge in Evershot, Dorset, where he was director of wine from 2004 until last month, Zwiebel’s new role will see him further develop The Samling’s wine offering.

Of his new appointment, Zwiebel said: “I am delighted to be joining The Samling, who have one of the finest wine cellars in England. I look forward to helping to grow their collection, and to introducing our guests to some truly wonderful wines.”

The Samling’s general manager, Oliver Smith, said: “By bringing together one of the world’s best sommeliers and one of the most impressive wine collections we are confident that The Samling will cement its reputation as the finest hotel in the UK for a truly exception wine experience. We welcome Eric and look forward to working with him.”
