Duvel teams up with Decatur

Belgian beer brand Duvel will be partnering with southern USA-inspired seafood pop-up Decatur on two dinners this May.

The dinners, taking place in the Loft & Gallery space at Mortimer House on 12 and 13 May, will be matching Low Countries brewing with Deep South hospitality.

It may seem odd to pair the Louisiana-inflected cooking of Decatur, which was founded in 2014, with Belgian beer, but this trans-continental dinner promises to show that the gastronomic gap between New Orleans and Antwerp.

While the devilled hand dived scallop is paired with the “aromatic but smooth” Duvel Original, the sweet seafood flavour of the BBQ shrimp will be complemented by the zesty Duvel Tripel Hop, and the dessert of beignets (effectively a doughnut doused in icing sugar) will be served with the “fruity but balanced” Duvel 6.66%.

The menu, developed by Decatur’s chef-founder Tom Zahir, priced at £56.75 per person (including service), reads as follows:

Crab-Boil Seasoned Popcorn

Devilled Hand Dived Scallop with Commanders Palace Bread

Paired with Duvel Original

Compressed Watermelon and Pickled Shrimp Tartare

‘Duvel’ New Orleans style BBQ’d Shrimp & Hominy Grits

Head on jumbo shrimp, cooked in a heavily spiced Duvel beer and butter sauce

Paired with Duvel Triple Hop Citra

Freshly fried ‘Cafe Du Monde’ style beignets with icing sugar and a Duvel ‘666’ caramel sauce

Paired with Duvel 6.66%
