UK’s most remote pub offers free beer for 15 mile hike

The most remote pub in the UK, as verified by the Guinness Book of Records, is offering free beer to anyone willing to take a 15 mile hike to get to it this summer.

The Old Forge pub, which is located on the shores of Loch Nevis in the village of Inverie, is owned by Knoydart Brewery who are running the competition in partnership with sports retailer Wiggle.

The brewery is offering a free Trale Ale to anyone willing to hike the 15 or so miles from the nearest road to the pub.

Indeed, for those without a car, the trip is even more treacherous, taking around 28 miles from the nearest village, Glenfinnan, and including a night in a bothy.

For those who fancy visiting the pub and don’t mind about the free beer, there is a speedboat ferry from Mallaig, a terminus town for the West Highland Railway, which takes around 10 minutes.

The Knoydart brewery provides beers to the Old Forge following a community buy-out of the pub. It received £200,000 of community funding from the government to ensure it stayed open as a community-owned asset with the new local owners opening the pub in March 2022. The pub is currently undergoing a major refurbishment before reopening soon.

Brewed in an old chapel, Knoydart beers are made on a 60 litre pilot HERMS electric brewery and a 5bbl kit with 4 fermenters. The water for its beer comes from the Millburn, which comes from the mountains in Glen Guiserein behind the village. The grains come from Muntons and hops from Britain and USA, as well as Germany, Czech Republic and New Zealand.
